“Imagine if all guys started smoking at age ten, and there were no groups that didn’t [smoke]; we would think that lung cancer is normal for all guys” …

“[another problem is that] it’s hard to believe that sexual activity can cause addiction because sex is healthy… but internet porn is not sex. Internet porn is as different from real sex as today’s video games are from checkers.”  –Gary Wilson on the Porn Addiction Epidemic

It’s both weird and good for me to talk about this. I will truthfully tell you, this has never been an issue for me. So it’s weird that I’m typing about it. It even felt weird to type the title. It’s also good for me, because although I haven’t struggled with it, I am on the opposite side of the effects this issue has. So please, stay kind while I learn.

I’m pretty sure Ted Talks are becoming one of my favorite places to learn. The following is a study on how porn literally destroys {steals, kills, destroys}. Before we keep going, let me tell you- I don’t want to know about pornography or the effects of it… but I need to. I have too many boys and men in my life I love deeply to ignore such a grande issue. My nephew is turning nine in four days, and if boys seek porn by ten years old, I need to know about it. Here is a bit of what you’ll learn:

-Most boys begin looking at porn at the age of ten. By the time they realize there is an issue, they have typically become addicted-typically within a decade

-When studies were first being conducted, the researchers could not find a ‘control group’ (a group of college-aged men who were not using porn)

-Some symptoms of ‘arousal addiction’ are easily mistaken for such things as ADHD, Social Anxiety, Depression, Performance Anxiety, OCD

– Thousands of men have begun giving up porn and feeling less depressed, more confident, and able to complete post-secondary much quicker, and with more success than those who do not quit

Now, I’m pretty set in my ways with pornography… so perhaps I shouldn’t say all this so boldly, because most importantly I do this in utter love for guys. But it’s true, and I won’t shy from truth. Also, if more than a nearly all of our male population is watching  addicted to it, we should probably wise up a bit.

This talk isn’t spiritually based. It’s scientific. It’s not about law or doing what is right or wrong according to scripture. It is NOT about condemnation. It is the natural consequences of actions and addictions. And though it is entirely non-religious, I believe these are some of the very important and logical reasons God tells us to run the heck away from sexual immorality. Really, this is about a loving Father in Heaven trying to help us understand that this is detrimental to your health; it is physically killing so much in our men, and hardly any of us realize how or why! This is not a ‘don’t do it’ video, it’ll help you understand why you really don’t even want it.

Of course, this is all very deeply spiritually related for me. There is a very real enemy trying to take all he can from you. Learning about you and how you physically operate, he begins to take advantage and grab hold of your heart while it’s innocent enough to still obey without question. And if it means he will reach inside your very functionability and rip it away from you, he will. He will and he does, and perhaps he’s doing it even to the likes of you.

And I believe there are a few things obviously not mentioned in the video, as this is not a faith-based conversation. I don’t think he mentions it blatantly at all, but I don’t think he cares how many partners people enjoy in life. I do. He doesn’t speak about this being a both-gender issue. I know it is. It both breaks and restores my heart, being that the group of men giving up porn are not church or spiritually based. I believe we should pave the way with the hope we have in Christ. But what is cool here, is that something good is starting to make its’ way.

Bravo boys! And- Much Love.

From your sister,

Dee
